RITCHIE, Leitch.
RITCHIE, Leitch. Reise nach St. Petersburg und Moskau, durch Kur- und Liefland … Aus dem Englischen von A. v. Treskow. Mit Abbildungen.
Quedlinburg und Leipzig. Druck und Verlag von Gottfr. Basse.  1836.
8vo (184 × 115 mm), pp. vi, [2], 279, [1]; with 13 lithographs, mostly by Eduard Gerhardt (printed by F. W. Wenig); scattered light spotting throughout, but a very good copy, uncut in the original plain blue wrappers, printed paper spine label, ms. shelfmark at foot.
Rare first edition in German of A Journey to St. Petersburg and Moscow through Courland and Livonia which, the translator, Albert von Treskow, tells us ‘appeared in London as [Charles] Heath’s “Picturesque Annual” for 1836, with twenty-five of the prettiest steel engravings after drawings by the famous A. G. Vickers, at the cost of one pound. For a price like that a German reader demands all the classics in one volume, and if the paper turns out to be poor needs must dons his spectacles with a certain sang froid’ (my translation).

The German publisher was evidently keen to get Ritchie’s book out quickly. It would have taken too long to have the illustrations engraved, so he used the young artist Eduard Gerhardt (1813–1888), later to achieve renown as a painter, particularly of architecture, to copy Vickers’ atmospheric drawings onto lithographic stone.

Cat. Russica R-1212. WorldCat locates a sole copy outside Europe, at the New York Public Library. Not in COPAC. For the first edition, see Cross G36 and Nerhood 200.
