The most stylish publisher’s binding?

I blogged last year about the idea of books being ‘fashionably orange’. Here’s another example:

This is a copy of the first edition of Die natürliche Tochter, the last of Goethe’s three verse dramas in the classical style, which had received its premiere, in Weimar, in April 1803. This copy is in the original orange printed boards, with matching endpapers and slipcase. In terms of overall design (the matching sprinkled endpapers and slipcase, and those striking orange boards), I think this might well be the most stylish publisher’s binding, for its date (1804), I have ever seen.

Interestingly, the book was also issued in blue paper covers, with the addition of eight leaves of publisher’s advertisements (not included in the orange version), likewise in a slipcase but with a printed calendar for 1804 pasted onto the sides.

Which makes me think: was the orange version special in some way?
